It has been a while since I've updated this but these past two months have been a whirlwind of events. We have been doing lots of yardwork and lots of swimming. Sariah and I both started back at school. She is loving her school. Me, not so much. I've learned a lot this past month in school but it has been so much information that I feel like they just throw it at you and see what sticks. I had my first exam and did a lot better than I thought I would.
I passed my IV and blood draw check off which means I can now do it in my clinicals. I inserted my first IV and foley last weekend in the ER at Del Webb Hospital and it was a big deal for me!!!
Also, Sariah got her tonsils out about two weeks ago and it has been a rough recovery. She is finally starting to act more like herself and occasionally complains that her ear hurts (a common side effect to the healing of a tonsillectomy) but she's been going back to preschool and is such a trooper. I got mine out about 5 years ago and it was honestly the worst pain I have been in and it stinks when you can't eat what you want.
The night before her surgery, we went to the library to pick out some movies and then we went to the grocery store to let her pick out some juices, ice cream, popsicles and soup for her to eat. In preparation for her surgery, we rented this book at the library called, "Good-bye Tonsils". It was the best idea! It is all about a little girl who is going to get her tonsils out and it goes through all the things that happen. We felt like it had prepared her for everything, including the sore throat. When I tried to take the book back to the library, Sariah burst into tears. I think she's a little sentimental about, especially since she is still healing, so I checked it out again for her. Anyway, in the book, the little girls mom got her a cake the night before the surgery that said "Goodbye Tonsils" on it. So I did the same for Sariah and she loved it. It was an ice cream cake so she could still eat it after her surgery.
Sariah and Daddy right before surgery
Giving a thumbs up!
Her and her silly socks
Her tonsils (it's hard to see, but you can tell that they are inflammed and red)
No, somebody at the bakery did not write the words. I only had the food coloring gel here so that was the best I could do. Sorry, Amy Nelson! You are probably really embarassed for me.
All in all, the surgery went great. She was in the OR for about 20 minutes, took about 30 minutes to recover and we were out of there in a total of 3 hours (the rest was the signing papers, talking to the doctors, getting vital signs, etc.) They said she did great and that she started crying when they put the mask on her (I would be scared too with a huge mask going over my nose and mouth and whole bunch of scary faces looking down on me). They had also commented on how mature she is. The recovery nurse said, "If it wasn't for her size, I would think she was 5 or 6 because she is so mature." Makes me a proud mama.
This is exactly what Sariah said verbatim "I did the balloon and the mask on me. I was scared but that's ok. It smells like bubble gum. My mommy and daddy camed to see me and bringed me a pillow pet. I had a purple bandaid on my hand and a clippy on my toe so I could have all of my blood. And I getted to wheel in the wheelchair. I feel sick and sleepy. Today it's raining with lots of lightning."
As a family, we always try to go to a Diamondbacks game every year. This year our tickets were free because the kids participated in the library's Summer Reading Program. We had a great night out as a family and they had an awesome fireworks show after the game. It's always nice to go to a game and your team wins!
Well that's all I can think of right now. The kids are growing big. We are excited to go to Utah for Thanksgiving to see all of our family and friends. We love you all and hope you are enjoying the Fall weather wherever you are (it's not here yet).
